When it comes to ground breaking computer games, few titles have had quite the same amount of shock that Prince of Persia brought to the computer screen when it debuted in 1989. The fluid animation of Dastan, the primary character in the game, along with the brutality of the death sequences made the game stand out in stark contrast to other titles on the PC at that time. Now, after this master work of game designer Jordan Mechner has been ported to nearly every console and handheld platform on the market today, a movie is being created. The movie’s official title corresponds with that of the game, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and it will stall film legend Jake Gylenhaal of Donnie Darko and Brokeback Mountain fame. MTV has shown strong backing for the movie which is expected to be a big player in 2010′s movie season, but must face down Iron Man 2 in order to get its fair share of box office acclaim. The series has historically done quite well across all platforms, being an adventure title that appeals to fans of both action and adventure games. While film adaptations of video games do not have the most splendid history in Hollywood, it is hoped that bringing the star on board may well carry the picture and give both gaming and non gaming audiences alike an adventure film that features a much different world than the ones typically offered in similar films. Gylenhaal has stated his firm belief that the picture will succeed.
